Why quality control starts before the order
For brake pad backing plates, quality is not only an end-of-line inspection topic. Many problems can be prevented before mass production if the buyer and supplier confirm the reference number, drawing, sample, material specification, thickness, surface requirement and packing details at the quotation stage.
Fuxin Brake supplies Q235B steel backing plates for aftermarket and OEM supply programs. For overseas buyers, the most efficient process is to approve a clear sample standard first, then use that standard for batch production and future repeat orders.
1. Confirm material and agreed thickness
Backing plate material should match the agreed specification for the brake pad program. Q235B steel is widely used for brake pad backing plates because it supports stable strength and regular production. Thickness should follow the buyer's drawing, sample or confirmed program requirement.
- Confirm material grade before pricing and sample making.
- Check whether full-thickness supply is required by the buyer's specification.
- Keep the approved thickness standard in the quotation and sample record.
2. Check profile dimensions, holes and ears
The backing plate profile must match the brake pad model, caliper fitment and friction material production process. Even small differences in holes, ears, slots or left/right variants may affect production or installation.
Buyers should send WVA, FMSI, OE, GDB or FDB references when available. If the project is a new model, drawings, sample photos and physical samples can reduce checking time.
3. Review bonding readiness
Surface readiness is important because the steel back must support friction material bonding and stable brake pad production.
For bonding preparation, buyers should confirm shot blasting, surface condition, oil control and whether any special treatment is required for their production process.
4. Approve samples before bulk production
Sample approval gives both sides a physical standard for mass production. The buyer should check dimensions, thickness, profile, holes, surface, marking, packing and any model-specific requirement. If a correction is needed, it is better to revise the sample before batch production starts.
- Compare the sample with the original backing plate or drawing.
- Check sample quantity and whether left/right versions are included.
- Record approved sample photos and key measurements for repeat orders.
5. Do not ignore packing and export handling
Backing plates are heavy metal components. Export packing should protect the parts from damage, moisture and mixing during transport. Buyers should confirm carton weight, pallet method, label requirement, model separation and whether mixed models are allowed in one shipment.
