Many overseas buyers do not source only one brake pad reference at a time. A distributor may need 30 to 100 fast-moving references, a brake pad factory may be testing new models, and a truck parts buyer may combine hardware kits with related backing plates or shims. These high-mix low-volume RFQs need clear structure before quotation.

1. Why high-mix low-volume RFQs need a different structure

A single-reference RFQ can often be checked from one drawing, sample or OE number. A mixed RFQ is different because each line may have a different risk: one backing plate may be a stock model, another may need a die review, a shim may need adhesive confirmation, and a hardware kit may be missing one spring or clip detail.

Before sending the RFQ, separate the request into backing plates, shims, hardware kits and tooling/dies. This lets the supplier confirm existing coverage, development difficulty, packing requirements and quotation timing for each group instead of treating the whole inquiry as one unclear item.

2. Use reference numbers, but add visual evidence

FMSI, WVA, OE, GDB, FDB and local catalog numbers are useful starting points. However, high-mix orders often include regional variations, older references or modified aftermarket shapes. Buyers should add front, back and side photos, key dimensions, sample availability and application notes when drawings are missing.

For backing plates, photos should show ears, holes, slots, thickness area and any bonding-ready surface requirement. For shims, the outline, hole positions, clip area, rubber or adhesive layer and thickness should be confirmed. For hardware kits, the RFQ should show every clip, spring, pin, guide plate and quantity per axle set.

One of the biggest RFQ delays is not knowing whether the buyer wants existing stock coverage, sample trial, replacement of a current supplier or a new product launch.
